ROBERT GLENN SMITH - AIR TRANSPORT AUXILLARY - USA

Smith's body was found washed ashore at Cill Einde, near Kilronan on Inishmore (Aran Islands), Co. Galway on 8 July 1941. He was buried in Killeany Roman Catholic Cemetery, Co. Galway on 9 July 1941. His grave was marked with stones (possibly the reason why his grave has become lost since the War). His next of kin was his mother Mrs Howard Smith of Warsaw, Indiana, USA. He was born on 12 January 1908. Smith was described as approximately 6 ft. tall with brown hair. From documentation recovered with him his occupation was recorded as a 'commercial air pilot.' His Airman's Rating Record was No. 50748-41. His Operator's License was No. 701605. Home address: 422 South Union Street, Warsaw, Indianna, USA. [ref. Martin Gleeson].

In 1949 Robert Smith’s remains were returned to the U.S. and he was reburied in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, Indiana.
